The most important feature of the "Model 1884" was the new "Buffington" rear sight. It was installed on new production arms just as soon as it was available, and also widely retro-fitted to arms in service.

Since there was NO difference in the blocks, except for the markings (which could not be changed) old stock ("1873" dated) was used until it was exhausted. There is, therefore, an overlap of a couple of years. 374xxx arms should be stamped SWP/1887.
