Re: SN and Markings, do they match
Posted by Ernie Brandt on Saturday, 15 November 2008, at 11:49 p.m., in response to SN and Markings, do they match, posted by Tom Clayton on Saturday, 15 November 2008, at 10:30 p.m.
The Serial # shows manufacture in Apr-June 1885.
The (P) mark behind the trigger strap is the firing proof.
Is the (A) on the Trigger Guard Strap or on the wood?
The (U) on the barrel bands stands for "up" & should be on the right side of the weapon.
The (P) on the barrel is a proof mark.
If you are comfortable with disassembling the weapon, check the barrel index marks on the right side where the barrel meets the receiver. They should match up perfectly. If not the barrel have been removed/changed.
