There is a pad that is used to remove rust and will not affect the bluing, it looks like a ball of steel wool with 1/8th inch curls of what looks like stainless steel.

The stuff works like magic, you basically just rub it where ever there is rust and it takes it right off and won't even touch the blue. I have a ball somewhere I just can't remember where I got or who sells it.
