If you have not already removed the finish & ruined the value of your piece, clean it with WD40, wipe it dry, oil it with a good gun oil (Remington) & leave it be. I coat my collection with a mixture of gun oil & Silicone grease from ACE hardware. The oil with evaporate but the Silicone will protect the metal. Some guys use wax as a finish but it's too hard to clean up after.

Trying to refinish the piece will destroy the value.

If you are down to brite metal----Forget the above.
