Your rifle was made in 1886. It MIGHT have seen use in the Span-Am War of 1898.

I use WD40 - lots of it - and 0000 or 000 steel wool. Olive oil and Scotchbrite is, IMHO, erring a bit TOO far on the side of caution, unless one were removing flyspecks from a MINT specimen. And, I'm a cautious person - NOT one of the powered wire wheel club!!!! One product to NEVER, EVER use is Naval Jelly - it leaves a totally unnatural appearance.
