Model 1868 Trowel Bayonet and Scabbard
One of the best examples of the Model 1868 Trowel Bayonet and Scabbard
I have seen. This one is serial numbered 8 in the inside of the socket
neck and the socket has the following patent information: E.R./PAT.
JUNE 22, 1869. Most 50 Caliber trowels do not have patent information
or a serial number. The slightly polished blade is excellent.
The scabbard has a clear CHILLINGWORTH / PAT. DEC. 1 1869 stamp
along with a visible second lighter stamp associated with the
maker: WELLMAN, FROST & CO. across the top and MASS in the
middle. In the bottom of the oval is SPRINGFIELD. The leather on the
inside and outside looks unissued!! The
variations in the blade is do to reflections. the blade is so shiny, it
is acting like a mirror. See pages 57-58 of the newsletter
for additional information on this bayonet and scabbard. $4695 + S/H.
