M73 Cadet Rifle, SN72488
U.S. Model of 1873 Cadet Rifle, Ser. #72488. The bore is Very Good -
bright and shiny. The exterior metal overall has turned plum brown. The
barrel is marked with a large "V/P/eagle head". It has an M1873 rifle
rear sight and one-piece front sight. Both the receiver and breechblock
are mottled gray. The block is marked "U.S./Model/1873". The serial
number is barely legible, but can be read using a magnifying glass in good
light. The high-arched breechblock has a spring-loaded firing pin. The
hammer is fine-checkered and patina with old pitting. The lock has a
two-notch tumbler and the plate, which is patina, is marked with the eagle
and "U.S./Springfield/1873". The triggerguard and bow are also patina
with evidence of old pitting. It has a smooth trigger. The buttplate is
likewise patina; it is marked "US" and has three small digits stamped into
the tang above the screw. The stock quite dark and is only Fair. It has
numerous dents, dings and a few gouges, but no cracks. It has slivers
missing on each side of the barrel near the muzzle and a chip missing at
the toe. It has no cartouche nor a "P" but does have a small initial "J"
behind the triggerguard plate.
