Model 1873 Rifle, SN58257
This is an early and Model 1873 Rifle made in 1875. The
rifle has the following correct early features: Type II
hammer, 1873 on the lock plate , M73
sight,
small v/p/Eagle stamps on the barrel, sold front sight, no letter between
the sight
and receiver, long wrist stock with ESA in an oval, early butt plate
with small U.S., M64 trigger plate and M64 sling swivel on bow, patent
date on front swivel and small U stamps on the barrel bands, ground
opening on thumb piece, early block with early stamp and high arch as
well as heavy metal above the firing pin opening (1875 alteration), the
first type
M73 cleaning rod with the last ungulation like that of the M70 rifle.
Circled P and stock inspector's mark. Additional features and variations:
Rear sight held with slotted screws, NJ stamp on stock and receiver, and a
hairline crack in the wrist of the stock (lock side only)
