M73 Cadet Rifle
SN323772
M73 Cadet Rifle, SN50676
U.S. Model of 1873 Cadet Rifle, ser. #50676. The bore on this rifle is
Good+; it has some frosting but no major pits and is very shootable. The
overall exterior metal finish is a fairly uniform plum brown. There are
small dents at various places on the barrel and the top of the
breechblock. The barrel has very faint proof marks "V" and "P"; the eagle
head is obscure. The upper band is from a rifle with the sling swivel
removed leaving the stacking swivel. The rear sight is the M1873 rifle
sight. The receiver is mottled, as is the high-arched breechblock. The
breechblock is marked with "Model 1873/an eagle head/crossed arrows/US".
The lock has a two-notch tumbler and is marked with the eagle,
"U.S./Springfield/1873". The hammer has coarse checkering. The
triggerguard bow has a lower sling swivel. The buttplate is not marked.
The rifle has a repro M1884 ramrod. The stock has been heavily sanded as
the metal stands out from it a bit. There is no visible cartouche or
proof "P". It also has what appears to be an old repair using wood filler
on the left side next to the receiver - see the images.
