Model 1884/1890
Carbine SN415449
Model 1884/90Carbine, SN415449
This Model 1884 Carbine has been redone by Springfield for the Sp-Am
War. The M90 rear sight protector is what makes the update. Usually a
front sight hood is also added, but in this case, the shading on the
barrel does not indicate that such a cover was on the carbine for a long
period of time. The bore in the carbine is very nice with some scale from
tardy cleaning. However, the bore is very shootable. There is no pitting
and the bore is shiny. The stock seems to be missing the cartouche and
circled P indicating the stock may be a replacement. The stock has not
been sanded, but is very dark. There are several cracks in the stock.
The one near the rear washer is typical for a carbine. However, the ones
on the butt stock are most unusual. The cracks to not follow the grain
and I believe they came from pounding or in some fashion putting strain
on the stock. The butt plate seems to have seen excessive damage
indicating the gun was frequently slammed into the ground or heavy gravel.
