M84 Cadet Rifle SN314841

M84 Cadet Rifle, SN314841

U.S. Model 1884 Cadet Rifle SN314841. This fine specimen is one of the last of the trapdoors - a double cartouched cadet manufactured by Springfield after production of the M88 rifles had ceased. The bore is excellent, bright and shiny. The blue on the barrel, receiver, lockplate, triggerguard, and butt plate has turned mostly plum brown. There is about 50% case color remaining on the breech block and tang. The stock is excellent with few dings and dents. It has two cartouches, a very crisp JLA/1895 and a more faint SWP/1885. There is a hint of a hairline crack ahead of the rear lock bolt, about 1/2" long. There is a faint circled P behind the trigger plate. The lock plate is undated; the hammer has fine checkering; the lock has a three position tumbler; the trigger is serrated. It has both upper and lower sling swivels. The butt plate is unmarked. The barrel has the large proof marks and the initails A and R ahead of the receiver. There is interesting wear at the muzzle end of the barrel, as though a bayonet was put on and taken off numerous times. It has a Buffington rifle rear sight and later type ramrod.
