1880 Triangular Rod Bayonet Rifle, SN156749
1880 Triangular Rod Bayonet Rifle, SN156749
This Model 1880 rifle is cartouched SWP/1881 and has the typical double P firing proofs. The rifle
has the keyhole butt plate which is typical of about half the M80's produced. About 1000 of these
rifles were produced in 1881. It has all the characteristics of an M80 rifle produced in that year. For example,
the front blade looks similar to the Buffington front blade, but slightly different in shape.
This was to compensate for the heavier weight near the muzzle. The sight is retained with slotless screws
that have not been played-with. The barrel blue is excellent and the bore is also excellent, shiny with
good rifling and no pitting or dark spots. The block and tang have some color case and the color case on the
top of the block seems to have changed. The darkened area is not corrosion, but a change caused by the
color case process. The stock shows signs of use, but solid with the original finish.
This is a very good example of an M80 rifle, very collectible!!
